Television

You can view free OTA (Over The Air) television through a rooftop antenna that every building will have. Your great/living room and bedrooms will all have a coaxial jack where you can connect your TV or box into. You would have a communications closet in your office. If you wish to have cable TV, the technician will need to go to your communications closet, and make the necessary changes. Once you choose cable TV, you would need an OTA DVR such as the Tablo to connect to the Antenna on the WAN side. You would then use a smart TV app to watch the OTA channels. This is good if the cable provider does not support your preferred network channels. There will be shelf to support such an arrangement. If you aren’t comfortable with setting this up, you can request a house call which will require you to be there for the connection.

If you don’t want to go through all of that trouble, you can use an IPTV (Internet Protocol TeleVision) service. If you have a smartTV, you would then download the preferred service app, and setup your credentials. You would then not have to make those changes at the communications room. You would choose whether you wish to watch OTA television, or through the IPTV provider. Since everything will require a currently active internet connection, you would not have to request a house call.

If you decide to stay with OTA television, but you wish to record TV shows while you are working or out, then you would want to buy an OTA DVR such as Tablo. This device will plug into the coaxial jack in the wall, and into a RJ45 jack in the wall. You would then go through the standard setup process for the TV to find your Tablo, and set things up. However, in my experience, the first few months – the system had a number of issues that made it a bit frustrating. I am not sure if the Tablo needed to flex its muscles or a software update, but these issues are a lot less frequent. While I still feel this is under powered. it works well enough.

If you have a basic TV, then you would need a smart TV adapter. This adapter will plug into your TV’s HDMI port, and when you wish to use the Smart TV services, you would select the appropriate HDMI port. There are a number of them, but it would be in your best interest to get something that is more than $50. Anything less may not be a pleasant experience for you.
