Communications Closet

While not technically a room, the communications closet is intended to provide a space for all of the LAN resources as well as television. If you decide on cable TV, the cable technician will need to go to this closet to change from OTA to the choice cable provider. The communications closet will have a 15U server rack which will allow you to install rack mount servers. 1U is for the patch panel. 1U is for the network switch, and 1U is for the network server. This will leave you with 12U for your NAS, media server, telephony server, and any other server not mentioned here. There will also be shelves with an electrical outlet, and ethernet jack for other server types such as an SFF PC, or Raspberry Pi.

Because of the Access Point in the apartment, there will be at least 1 yellow cat-8 cable that would go from the patch panel to a POE (Power Over Ethernet) switch. You should not move this cable from the patch panel, nor switch. In addition, a similar cable is for the control panel. All yellow cables are for POE connections. If you decide to have a SIP desk phone, you might need a POE connection. There will be a couple spare POE switches, and a couple of spare yellow cables. Every ethernet jack will have a number on it. This number correlates with the number on the patch panel. This is designed to make your life easier. If you are uncomfortable with using the patch panel, and network switch, you can request a house call.
